The “Theban calendar” compared with its source
In 1863 P. Christian published a “Theban calendar” of 360 images, presented as Egyptian. The same images had been in print since 1488. We set the two texts side by side, degree by degree.
What the comparison shows
- It is the same series. Of 360 degrees, 187 name the same object in both texts (a lion, a sword, a well), and most of the others show the same scene in other words. Christian did not discover a calendar: he took over and retouched a series in print since 1488.
- We found 32 changed images, 9% of the whole.
- 3 were made magical. The doctor in his gown becomes a Magus with a tiara, the clergyman with incense becomes a Magus, and the fowler “or searcher of secrets” becomes a student of the occult sciences. These are exactly the degrees the Magus rule rests on.
- 4 were softened. Several naked women of the 1488 text are dressed again: “a beautiful woman standing”, “half veiled”. The crudest of the 360 images, on the 27th of Pisces, becomes “a naked man knocking at a door”.
- 4 are shifted by one place: two pairs of neighbouring degrees have swapped images, which looks like a copying slip rather than a choice.
- 21 show another image. Some come from a misread word: three crowns become three crows, two rakes become two crossed keys in a sun.
What this means for the test: the two “Magus degrees” exist only since 1863. In the 1488 text, the 21st degree of Sagittarius “denotes a wise man”, and the 2nd of Libra “a religious and faithful person”.

Method and limits
A French-English lexicon of the things depicted finds the degrees where both texts name the same object (187 of 360). The other 173 were read one by one. The first 187 were not all re-read: a change that keeps the same object, like the doctor turned Magus, may have escaped us elsewhere. The 1863 text comes from an online transcription, not from the original edition; the 1488 text is read in the English translation of 1879.
