Would the Egyptian Order of Naples have taken you?

The Egyptian Order never published its criteria. But in 1896 Giuliano Kremmerz founded the Brotherhood of Myriam, which its rule calls “the preparation to the Order of the Egyptian Rite and its outer circle”. Seven questions drawn from what he wrote about it.

Nobody entered the Order: one entered Myriam, and was watched there. This test is therefore about the outer door, the only one that left texts. Answer for yourself; nothing is sent anywhere.

1. Would the people who know you call you an honest person?
Enrolment is open to all “honest persons”.
2. Do you work for the good of others expecting nothing back?
The Brotherhood rests “on the love of one’s fellow and on the most transcendent charity”.
3. Would you help anyone who suffers and comes to ask?
“There is no Brotherhood […] concerned solely with putting the forces and secrets of magic to work for all the suffering who turn to it.”
4. Would you keep secret everything that touches your inner work?
The one constraint, according to the Brotherhood’s historians summarising the Pact: to undertake to keep secret all that strictly concerns the initiatic activity. (A summary, not a quotation.)
5. Do you have the constancy, the intellect and the love of truth that a study of many years takes?
The Brotherhood of Myriam forms “a true initiatic school for those who will have the constancy, the intellect and the love of truth”.
6. Would you bring in twelve people before being allowed to rise one degree?
Each member has “the obligation to work for the spreading of his filiation” (article 8 of the Rule: twelve new members to pass a grade).
7. Would you accept knowing nobody in the order but your initiator, never approaching the other members?
“It remains expressly forbidden to neophytes belonging to one company to have communion or dealings with neophytes, masters or mistresses of another company, even one depending on the same initiating master.”

Where this comes from

Giuliano Kremmerz (Ciro Formisano, Portici 1861 – Beausoleil 1930) founded the Therapeutic and Magical Brotherhood of Myriam in 1896, devoted to “occult medicine”. Its rule calls it preparatory to the Egyptian Order, also called the Osiridean Order. Under its rule (articles 15 and 16), its only resources are gifts, the remainder going to brothers in need and to free remedies.
